Clinton Hill / The Navy Yard

Immediately east of Pratt Institute, Clinton Hill has become popular for its affordable townhouses and laid-back feel. The Brooklyn Navy Yard--which hasn't been functional since the 1960s--has become an important high-tech light-industrial center that houses a full-scale movie studio, among other businesses. The rebirth of the Navy Yard and the popularity of nearby Fort Greene and Williamsburg have pushed development into Clinton Hill, and even the loading docks of old industrial buildings near the Navy Yard have sprouted trendy bars and restaurants.

The eastern end of the neighborhood towards Bed-Stuy features inexpensive new construction as well as modest older buildings that used to house dockworkers. The western end towards Fort Greene has a wide range of historic townhouses, from the magnificent to the modest, as well as a few loft conversions. Businesses have followed the influx of new residents, and a few high-end restaurants mix comfortably with authentic ethnic eateries. The area is serviced by the G train, and a transfer is required to get into Manhattan.
