Park Slope

Named for Prospect Park and the ridge on which it sits, Park Slope is the neighborhood that rekindled interest in ‘Brownstone Brooklyn’ in the 1970s and 80s. The neighborhood was one of the most desirable in the country in the late 19th century, but suburban flight in the mid-20th century saw it become a lower-middle-class Italian-and-Irish district. Early preservation action made it become one of the city’s first revitalization successes, and by the 1980s it had become an ideal of urban living. Now its streets, lined with mature shade trees and spectacularly-renovated townhouses, are magnetic to Manhattanites looking for a good place to raise a family.

As the neighborhood has evolved, so have its commercial districts: Seventh Avenue’s restaurants and shops cater to Park Slope’s established families from the gigantic brownstones near the park, and trendy Fifth Avenue serves younger residents. Both avenues, along with the huge Olmsted-designed park, attract weekenders from the city, who have no problem getting to the neighborhood by any of its four Subway lines.
