Red Hook

Over the last several years, people have slowly migrated to this former warehouse-and-factory district for its industro-chic vibe and spectacular waterfront, whose panoramas include the Statue of Liberty and Lower Manhattan. A burgeoning artist community and the city’s largest Fairway Market draw weekenders to the southern end of Van Brunt Street, and from there a commercial district has begun to grow.

Housing options reflect the neighborhood’s history: older units tend to be modest rowhouses or apartment buildings that used to house dock workers, while newer units include loft conversions and startlingly modern townhouses. There are also plenty of commercial opportunities on Van Brunt and several neighboring streets, where retailers are following the steady northward transition from industrial to residential. Although it’s relatively isolated (the nearest Subway station is a bus ride away), a water taxi service to Manhattan and easy car access to the Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel make it easier to get around.
