Williamsburg

One of the more notorious neighborhoods of Brooklyn, Williamsburg is quite large geographically and further divided into sub-neighborhoods with distinct social identities.

North Side, due to its waterfront location and exceedingly quick subway access into Manhattan, has experienced an influx of migrants (er, hipsters) from lower eastern Manhattan--and interestingly enough--the Northwest region of the US. Paving the way in the 80's, were artists fleeing rising rents in Manhattan and seeking Williamsburg's large studio spaces. Currently a very trendy hotspot with a lively nightlife and fancy boutiques dotting the mixed residential and industrial street scene, North Side is experiencing intense development and conversion of industrial buildings into residential lofts. North Side endures some controversy due to rising rents and the displacement of the longtime Polish and Italian communities.

By contrast, South Side has retained more of the older communities of residents: Puerto Rican and Dominican. Also featuring boutiques and popular restaurants along the main drag of Bedford Ave, South Side enjoys a quieter existence than it's neighbor to the north being further away from subway transportation. Even further south, lies the community of South Williamsburg, or Wallabout, which primarily hosts a large Hasidic community.
