East Harlem (Spanish Harlem, El Barrio)

More commonly referred to as Spanish Harlem or El Barrio, East Harlem is home to one of the largest Latino communities in the city. The neighborhood is also hosts various small communities of immigrants from all over the world. East Harlem continues to diversify with the construction of new residential and commercial developments in the neighborhood.

All of Harlem, including East Harlem, is undergoing what some consider another renaissance, as many of the old townhouses and brownstones are being converted into modern housing, and as rents in neighboring villages such as the Upper East and West Sides have risen considerably. This has caused an influx of new residents into East Harlem, creating a controversial transitional state regarding the social demographics of the neighborhood. Highlight: El Museo del Barrio
