Harlem (West Harlem)

Technically speaking, Harlem refers to the stretch of land north of Central Park up to 155th St, spanning the distance between the East and Hudson Rivers. However, today the word Harlem typically refers to West Harlem (west of St. Nicholas Ave), which is distinct from East Harlem aka Spanish Harlem (El Barrio).

Harlem began as farmland which evolved into a suburb of, and eventually was absorbed into the city's boundaries with the expansion of the NYC subway system. The demographics of Harlem have transitioned greatly since its original inception, though for most of its recent history it has been a predominantly African-American community.

Present day Harlem is experiencing yet another revival of the neighborhood, as intense residential and commercial development are currently underway. This has created yet another shift in Harlem's demographics, as people priced out of neighborhoods in lower Manhattan have started to migrate north into Harlem's still affordable and revitalizing community.
