Lower East Side (LES)

Originally a gigantic neighborhood encompassing the entire East Village to the north and part of the eastern section of neighboring Chinatown, the Lower East Side is still a large neighborhood by NYC standards. Once a community of mainly immigrants from Eastern Europe, the Lower East Side has embraced a large Latino population, as well as smaller Japanese, Bangladeshi, and Muslim communities.

Even more recently, the Lower East Side has experienced a large influx of artists and musicians, further altering the demographics of the neighborhood, and introducing chic boutiques, bars, and restaurants into the landscape. At the moment, the northern section of the Lower East Side is one of the trendiest spots in the city, featuring a vibrant, pulsing nightlife. Rents and real estate values have skyrocketed across the Lower East Side as a result of the new scene, and extensive residential development is currently underway. Highlights: The Nightlife
