West Village (Greenwich Village)

The West Village, originally and also known as Greenwich Village, is one of Manhattan's true cultural hearts. Some consider the West Village to be part of Greenwich Village, and others consider them to be the same neighborhood. Known for its off-the-grid layout and cobblestone streets, the West Village has served as a major epicenter for progressive activism, alternative culture, and bohemia.

During the 20th century, the West Village became home to countless artists, poets, and writers, including members of the Beat Generation, as well as musicians who greatly influenced the folk rock movement of the 1960's. The West Village has given birth to many social, artistic and political movements, including the gay liberation movement. Today the neighborhood continues to host a vibrant gay community.

The West Village has changed dramatically over the decades as its cultural significance and central location made it popular among new arrivals to New York. The continued increased demand caused a sharp rise in real estate values and subsequently shifted the demographics from a primarily bohemian neighborhood into a mixed community including professionals and celebrities. Currently an expensive and sought-after neighborhood, the West Village is home to high-end fashion boutiques, fancy restaurants and lounges, artsy cafes, and a handful of institutionalized remnants of the independent arts scene.
